Parklands Food Fest to showcase Western Sydney's brightest culinary stars - Dan and Angie Hong

Top Sydney chef, Dan Hong is set to delight audiences at Parklands Food Fest 2017, alongside chef/restaurateur Angie Hong, founder of Cabramatta landmark restaurant, Thanh Binh. The mother-and-son duo will share their knowledge of classic Vietnamese cooking, along with some contemporary twists from Dan’s amazing repertoire.

One of the faces of Australia’s celebrity food scene, Dan Hong is the brains behind acclaimed Sydney restaurants Ms G’s and Mr Wong, along with Papi Chulo in Manly and Mexican cantina El Loco. He’ll be taking his mother’s authentic Vietnamese dishes to the next level - think cheese burger-inspired spring rolls!

From an early start in Angie’s Thanh Binh restaurant in Cabramatta, Dan went on to earn his stripes at hatted establishments such as Longrain, Marque and Tetsuya’s before travelling to the acclaimed WD-50 in New York. He’s now the star of the Merivale Group’s flagship Asian establishments as well as SBS TV’s reality TV series, The Chefs’ Line. He also headlined the ABC series #Shelfie, a major hit with young home-cooks and has published a cookbook, Mr Hong, with Murdoch Books.

“I’m very excited to cook alongside my Mum at Food Fest and I can’t wait to show off my style of cooking. I’m a huge fan of Western Sydney where I first started cooking. It’s the first place I take visitors: to Cabramatta, Canley Vale or Fairfield for Lao, Vietnamese and other great Asian eating”, said Dan.

His mother Angie came to Sydney from Vietnam in 1971, as a student. Following a degree in chemical engineering and polymer science at UNSW, she set up the long-running and hugely successful Thanh Binh restaurant in Cabramatta and later also in Newtown.

Angie will share her authentic recipe for classic spring rolls and her famous Vietnamese salad, using just-picked produce from Parklands farmers. “I’m very excited to working in the heart of Western Sydney once again and I look forward to using such super-fresh vegetables and herbs”, said Angie.

Parklands Food Fest is a free community event, now in its sixth year. Its Home Grown theme celebrates the best of Western Sydney’s food and drinks businesses. The festival will be held at Lizard Log Amphitheatre, Abbotsbury on Saturday 9 September (10am- 4pm) with free on-site parking.

Parklands Food Fest highlights include more than 50 food stalls, the Parklands’ own fresh farm produce, live music, cooking demonstrations by leading food personalities, gardening workshops, a huge range of kids’ entertainment, our Home Grown Microbrewery Marquee offering a variety of locally-brewed craft beers, presented by Sydney Beer Week and the brand-new Sweet Spot which will be serving a selection of glorious desserts including artisan gelato, crème brulee, churros, macarons, sweet crepes, waffles and much more.
