Western Sydney is set to be the future home of the most exciting private zoo in Australia with planning approval now in place to build the 16.5 hectare facility at Bungarabee Park in Western Sydney Parklands.

Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres and Minister for Environment Gabrielle Upton said Sydney Zoo will offer an unparalleled tourism experience with more than 30 large animal exhibits accessible through immersive, safari-like enclosures and elevated boardwalks.

“Sydney Zoo will set a new standard in visitor experience and have people coming back time and time again,” Mr Ayres said.

“Set to be Australia’s most technologically advanced and innovative zoo in Australia, it will also feature an incredible integrated Aboriginal and natural heritage program, focusing on the local Darug people of Western Sydney.

“Construction of Sydney Zoo will also give Western Sydney a $61 million shot in the arm, creating160 full-time jobs during construction with 120 full-time jobs in place during operation.”

Minister for the Environment Gabrielle Upton said Sydney Zoo will intensify the attraction of Western Sydney Parklands, a hugely significant parcel of land which will offer residents and visitors alike a vibrant recreation space.

“The $15 million facelift of the 200 hectare recreational Bungarribee Parklands opened in March and is proving immensely popular with residents and visitors alike,” Ms Upton said.

“Western Sydney Parklands is the largest urban park in Australia and on the backdoor of more than two million residents.

“It is the natural home for a world-class exotic and native animal conservation and exhibition facility, and important education resources like the Educational Amphitheatre, Aquarium, Insectarium and Reptile and Nocturnal House.”

Building work starts later this year on Sydney Zoo with the facility set to open before the 2018 summer school holidays.
